Edwardian Pre-Raphaelites, The Art of John and Mary Young Hunter

8th June - 28th July 2000

The Flagmender, by John Young Hunter

The Flagmender
John Young Hunter
Oil on canvas laid on board
24 x 18 in
61 x 45.5 cm
Inscribed lower right, 'JY Hunter'

The precise purpose of The Flagmender, remains obscure. The girl appears to be repairing a large flag of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, which during the ten years preceding the Great War, stumbled from crisis to crisis, as the Hapsburg dynasty went into decline. The work is therefore allegorical, but the precise circumstances of its allegory remain to be explained.
