Oil on canvas laid on board
24 x 18 in
61 x 45.5 cm

The precise purpose of The Flagmender, remains obscure. The girl appears to be repairing a large flag of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, which during the ten years preceding the Great War, stumbled from crisis to crisis, as the Hapsburg dynasty went into decline. The work is therefore allegorical, but the precise circumstances of its allegory remain to be explained.
